Genesis

The Bioinformatics Centre at KAU runs under the Biotechnology Information System Network (BTISnet) programme, of DBT, Government of India. The Centre was upgraded to DIC [Distributed Information Centre] during 2004 to support Plant Biotechnology research. Major activities of the centre are listed below:

As a supporting centre for Biotechnology

The Centre was shifted to new premises in September 2006 which also has facilities for wet lab work. Following facilities are available at the Centre:

  •  Database querying

  •  Sequence analysis

  •  Primer designing

  •  Molecular visualization & Docking

  •  PCR analysis

  •  Gel Documentation for Molecular Marker Data.

 Research Highlights
The main area of specialization is Plant Biotechnology. Apart from acting as a supporting centre for Biotechnology research, the Centre is involved in creating databases relevant to agriculture like SpicesInfo and RiceInfo. Other In Silico projects that are carried out include:
 ● Predicting functionally important residues in cysteine proteinases involved in programmed cell death of plants
 ● A tool for the analysis of variation of amino acids in the conserved domains of proteins
 ● An evolutionary and structural analysis of Auxin Response Factor
 ● Imperativeness of Coronatine-Insensitive 1 protein in Jasmonate signaling mechanism: A computational biology scenario

Databases Created

SpiceInfo: A database on Indian spices offering CD-ROM search facility is being built using DHTML and JAVA programming. The fields available in the database include Scientific name, Common name, Morphology, Varieties, Soil and climate, Crop establishment, Disease management, Harvesting, Processing and marketing.

RiceInfo: A genetic Database on Rice: 3 divisions

  • General: Taxonomic data, Status in Kerala.

  • Biotechnology: Data on Varieties, Hybrids, Molecular Breeding, Data on Genetic transformation in rice and Current research work.

  • Bioinformatics: Genome and Proteome annotated data and Links to tools for data analysis

Training

The Centre has been successful in creating awareness of Bioinformatics in the field of biological sciences amongst the scientists and students of the Institute through organization of Training programmes on different aspects of Bioinformatics. Bioinformatics awareness fosters the growth of Biocomputing and allied disciplines like Genomics and Proteomics.

Bibliographic Support

The Centre provides CD-ROM search facility for databases acquired like DERWENT, AGRISEARCH, AGRICOLA etc. The centre has created databases on Indian Spices and Rice.

Web-Portal Development

The Centre is updating its portal which can be accessed at www.kaubic.in. The centre has an established 20Mbps leased line internet connectivity from AIRTEL.
