The Department of Agricultural Engineering was established in 1979 in the College of Horticulture, Vellanikkara. The mandate of the department is the triple function of Teaching, Research and Extension activities in the field of Agricultural Engineering.
Post Graduate programme in Agricultural Engineering:
M Sc (Ag. Engg.) was started in 1979 with an intake capacity of 4 students in the department. Later in 1985 after the formation of Agricultural Engineering College (Kelappaji College of Agricultural Engineering & Technology – KCAET) at Tavanur, Malappuram the M Sc.(Ag. Engg.) programme was shifted to KCAET, Tavanur.

Supervising the repair and maintenance of farm implements.
Repair and maintenance of automobile vehicles of the college and Technical scrutiny of minor civil works of College of Horticulture and nearby stations in the central zone.
The engineering workshop at Mannuthy is modified into Agro Engineering Service Centre and the Staff of the department are deputed to run the center. Centre undertakes the following works.
Repair and maintenance of Farm machinery and implements.
Repair and maintenance of all kinds of automobiles.
Design and fabrication of different types of protected cultivation structures.
Design and construction of Rain Water Harvesting System.
Design and installation of modern Irrigation techniques.
Design and installation of different types of farm structures ands dairy equipments.
Training programmes:
Conducting trainings on
‘Operation and maintenance of Farm Machineries’- for unemployed youth, ‘Selection and installation of Agricultural Pump sets’ - for the officials of Dept. of Agriculture.
‘Alternate Energy Conservation in Homesteads (Biogas)’ - for the officials of Dept. of Agriculture.
Watershed management and rain water harvesting techniques – for the farmers, representatives of local bodies and officials
The department is associating with Centre for Gender Studies in Agriculture different projects. Also Department provides resource persons for various training programmes of various departments for department officials and farmers.

Graduated in Civil Engineering and specialized in Soil and Water Engineering (Irrigation Water Management) from IARI, New Delhi. Serving KAU since 28-11-1981. Have more than 26 years experience in teaching, research and extension in different stations/schemes of the KAU, including SIDA Assisted Ground Water Project, Agri. Electronics Project (DoE, Govt. of India), KCAET, Tavanur, AICRP on Water Management at ARS, Chalakudy (as Chief Scientist), Communication Centre, Mannuthy and College of Horticulture.
Er. P.S.Preman,Assistant Professor
Is a graduate in Agricultural Engineering and field of specialization is Farm Power Machinery and Energy from KAU. Worked as Assistant Engineer in Department of Agriculture under Government of Kerala for the period from 21.10.1997 to 16.07.2002 and joined in KAU at KCAET, Tavanur, on 17.07.2002. Associated with AICRP on FIM (ICAR), Coconut fuel for IC Engine Schemes, etc. Have more than 6 years experience in teaching, research and extension at KCAET, Tavanur, and College of Horticulture, Vellanikkara .
P.K.Sureshkumar,Assistant Professor
Joined in KAU service on 06-07-1998. Specialized in the field of Farm Power Machinery and Energy. Now undergoing Ph.D at TNAU, Coimbatore.
