GENESIS

The Department of Agricultural Economics commenced functioning in 1972.

 

MANDATE  

The mandate of the department is to create, preserve, and disseminate knowledge through education, research and extension on the issues related to socio-economic aspects of agriculture and rural development. The postgraduate programme in Agricultural Economics was started in 1979.

FACILITIES

The department of Agricultural Economics has all the modern facilities required for conducting UG and PG teaching, PG computer lab, and the necessary facilities for consultation for farm planning, Agribusiness entrepreneurship, project management and natural resource valuation and environmental accounting. It has also the expertise and facilities for organizing training programmes at the regional or the national level.

Dr. K. Jesy Thomas. - Professor & Head

Has a total experience of 25 years in teaching, research and extension, out of which was a PG teacher for 18 years.

Publications – has published more than 45 research papers in various national journals of repute. Has authored 5 books, and contributed chapters in edited books. (5nos)

Highlights – Specialist in the field of Production Economics , Farm Management. And Intellectual Property Rights

Dr.Satheesh Babu,K.  –  Professor

Experience – has a total experience of 22 years in teaching, research and extension, out of which, experience in PG teaching is for 12 years. 

Publications – has published more than 35 research papers in various national and international journals. Has edited 1 book, and contributed 3 chapters in edited books. He has published 4 Technical bulletins.

Highlights – Specialist in the field of Agricultural Finance & Project Analysis.

Acted as various institution building activities of the university like Task Force Member for designing Rural Agricultural Work Experience (RAWE) programme module, concurrent evaluation of Government of India schemes like Macro management in Agriculture etc.

Officiated as the Assistant Warden of the Students Hostel and Staff Editor of Students’ Magazine.

Acting as the Project Coordinator, Agro Economic Studies (AES) wef 21-11-08

Acting as a consultant for Centre for Water Resources Development and Management (CWRDM), Kozhikkode as an Irrigation Economist for their research and training programmes

Acted as Course Associate of the ICAR-sponsored Winter School on “Market Led Extension: Tools and Dimensions” held from 1-12-2004 to 21-12-2004.

Acted as the first Officer in charge of the Information and Sales Centre of the University, and received a letter of citation from the university in this regard for the services rendered in building the Centre as an important wing of the Directorate of extension and a nucleus of farmer service in the region. Later, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research recognized the Information and Sales Centre as a model to be duplicated in SAUs to establish ATIC (Agricultural Technology Information Centre) and provided Rs.30 lakhs for this purpose.

Invitee to the National Consultation on WTO and India: Strategizing beyond Hong Kong, jointly organized by the Centre for Trade and Development (CENTAD), New Delhi, and the Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce & Industy (FICCI) at New Delhi on 20-3-2006.

Invitee to the South Asian Regional Consultation on WTO and India: Strategizing beyond Hong Kong, jointly organized by the Centre for Trade and Development (CENTAD), New Delhi, and the Asia Pacific Trade and Investment Initiative, UNDP Regional Centre, Colombo at New Delhi on 21 – 22 April

Current Activities - Currently, acting as Associate Professor of Agricultural Economics from 12-2-1999 onwards.

Major achievements – teaching

Designed the course curriculum for 1 UG and 1 PG courses.

Has guided 4  students at the Post Graduate level as Major Advisor, and was member of the Advisory Committee for 7 PG students.

The definition of “ Home garden Agriculture “was accepted by the United Nations University, and Published in the United Nations University Press, Tokyo.

Was a team member in developing 2 homestead models under irrigated and rainfed conditions for South Kerala.

Dr.P.Indira Devi - Professor

-Has total experience of 23 years, of which 19 years in teaching and research and 23 years in extension.

-Did PhD with Ford Foundation fellowship

- Recipient of the Women and Development Pilot project Award 2000, of Shastry Indo- Canadian Institute.

-Visited several countries for attending training programmes, conferences and presenting research papers.

-Has undertaken research projects with funding from premier organizations at national and international level

-Publications include research papers, chapters in books, policy brief and edited works, technical bulletins and  popular articles

-South Asian Network for Development and Environmental Economics (SANDEE) has published the Working Paper based on the research report

- Major areas of specialization are environmental economics, forest economics and Agribusiness

-Offering courses for  UG and PG students of College of Horticulture and College of Forestry and PG guidance

- Research  achievements :

Pioneering work on health cost estimation of pesticide exposure among agrl. workers in Kerala. Evolved policy suggestions for pesticide management in agriculture. Currently pursuing the studies on pesticide use in fruits and vegetables and related externalities.

Suggested a methodology for irrigation water pricing in the state

Assessed the performance of home scale agribusiness units in Kerala

Estimated the  timber stock and economics of teak plantations in Kerala

Dr. A. Prema, Assistant Professor (Sr. Scale)

Has total experience of 8 years in teaching , research and extension , and 2 years in PG teaching

Highlights – Specialized in the field of Agricultural marketing, Decentralised planning,  participatory planning and watershed planning

Current activities

 - Principal investigator of the project on Hariyali – watershed development programme for Pazhayannur block panchayat.

-Member of the concurrent evaluation of Government of India schemes like Macro management in Agriculture etc.

-Officiating as the Programme Officer of National Service Scheme

- Has guided 2 PG students as major advisor , and was the member of the PG Advisory Board of 2 students.

-Publications include research papers, chapter in book,  technical bulletins and  popular articles

-Offering courses for  UG and PG students of College of Horticulture and College of Forestry and PG guidance

Research  achievements :

Evaluated the agricultural projects under taken during the IX Plan period with the aid of fund from KRPLLD.

Assessed the performance of the buyer- seller market for rice in Palakkad district.

Working on a project for the development of agricultural plans for the agroecological zones of Palakkad

Dr. E.K. Thomas – Former Professor & Head

Experience – has a total experience of 28 years in teaching, research and extension, out of which he was a PG teacher for 18 years. 

Publications – has published more than 30 research papers in various national journals of repute. Has authored 3 books, and contributed chapters in edited books.

Highlights – Specialist in the field of Production Economics & Farm Management. Acted as expert in various selection Committees for research Organizations like Kerala Forest Research Institute, Peechi; and, Commercial Banks like the Dhanalaksmi Bank Ltd., and the South Indian Bank Ltd., PG Examiner for various SAUs.

 Officiating in the following capacities now : 

  1. Member of Board of Studies, KAU

  2. Project coordinator of the coordination group in Agro Economics (3 Years)

  3. Member of the Task force in Rubber Plantation, Vellanikkara estate, KAU

  4. Current Activities - Currently, acting as the the Professor and Head of Agricultural Economics and Padmasree Paul Pothen IFFCO Chair from 1999 onwards.

     Designed the course curriculum for 1 UG and 3 PG and PhD courses. Has guided 12  students at the Post Graduate level, and was member of PG Advisory Committee for 39 students .
